![]() ![]() The Smartcam HD Outdoor is relatively easy to install, but the printed instructions are vague, so make sure you follow the more comprehensive instructions included on the app. There's also a button for defining up to three motion detection zones and one for toggling between low- and high-quality video mode. At the bottom of the screen are buttons for recording video on demand, taking a snapshot, enabling push-to-talk (if a microphone and speaker are connected), adjusting the brightness level, and changing the image orientation. Tapping the camera icon on the main page allows you to view live video. The Camera Setup page is where you go to enable night vision, set audio levels (if you're using a speaker and microphone), change the Wi-Fi network, view the SD card status, and adjust motion sensitivity. For now, you have to use the Playback button for that. You can't currently tap an event to view the associated video (assuming you have installed an SD card), but Samsung plans to add that feature within the next month or so. Here you can view live video, play back recorded video by date, and view a list of motion events with the time and date. Next to each camera name is a button that takes you to the main menu for that specific camera. You can also set up email notifications, but this feature only works with Gmail accounts. The Camera page is the default you're currently viewing when you log in, and the Setup page lets you enable automatic login and push notifications. Upon logging into the mobile app, you're presented with a list of installed cameras at the top of the page, and three buttons (Cameras, Setup, and About) at the bottom. On the front of the module are a Wi-Fi Direct button and a status LED, and at the bottom there's a Reset button and a microSD card slot. Unfortunately, that means you'll have to run even more wires outside. The Smartcam HD Outdoor doesn't have a built-in speaker or microphone, but the module has jacks for an external speaker and microphone if you want to wire the camera for two-way audio. The back panel has a power input, an RJ12 port (for the camera), and an Ethernet port (for wired connectivity). The Wi-Fi module is white with silver trim and measures 1.0 by 4.2 by 3.2 inches (HWD). Although the camera is weatherproof, the module is not, and must be located indoors. The camera itself not Wi-Fi enabled on its own instead, it connects to a small included Wi-Fi module (hence the cable), which in turn connects wirelessly to your home router. Protruding from the back of the mounting plate is a thick white 28-foot RJ12 cable that is hardwired to the camera. The camera is attached to a round 2-inch mounting plate by a swivel ball that lets you adjust the camera angle after it has been mounted. The camera has a 128-degree field of view and a 4X digital zoom, and it uses 24 infrared LEDs to deliver night vision video at up to 50 feet. The Smartcam HD Outdoor ( at Amazon) (Opens in a new window) is a small bullet-style 1080p camera with a 2-inch long white housing and a round glossy black lens cover that's 2 inches in diameter. However, you'll have to supply your own SD card, and if you want two-way audio, your own speaker and microphone. Samsung doesn't offer cloud-based recording with this camera, but it does have a microSD cart slot for capturing video locally. The camera itself isn't wireless and has to be tethered to a Wi-Fi module via a long, bulky cable, but it delivers very sharp 1080p video, crisp colors, and excellent night vision imagery. ![]() With the Smartcam HD Outdoor Camera ($229), Samsung offers a more streamlined surveillance camera that unlike the original, is designed for outdoor use.
