In several years, books will still be written and movies will still be made, with premises exactly like this one, and people will still watch, read and enjoy them. Perhaps that’s because what this genre lacks in originality, it makes up for in entertainment and escapism. This genre sells, no matter how many times its been done. The shelves of YA dystopian novels in any bookstore are stocked with books just like this, and for the most part many of them are interchangeable if a few details are tweaked. There’s not much original about this movie, but truth be told, it’s hard to find originality in the dystopian genre. The script borrows heavily from literature such as 1984, Brave New World, Fahrenheit 451 and The Giver. Everyone wears dark, neutral colors, promoting conformity. Pre-recorded lessons about the horror of past wars are broadcast on mega TVs everywhere. There’s also a new arm of the law, the Grammaton Cleric, established to enforce all this and make sure no one is experiencing emotion. This new society, Libria, has also elected to burn anything that would compel someone to feel emotion, including paintings, literature and musical records. All members of society carry around it in vials and take at regular intervals, with an injection straight into their veins. The government and society as a whole have decided that humans’ volatile natures must be repressed to avoid more war and so they invent a drug called Prozium that suppresses all emotions. It’s true that movies like this have been done before, but there’s something fun and extremely watchable about this movie, regardless.Įquilibrium is set sometime in the 21st century, after a third World War. This movie is a bit of a sleeper, in that it’s not well-known, but still generally very well-received among audiences. Kurt Wimmer has a way of creating the totalitarian look to all his films. The costuming is central to the characters in the film because their uniforms made the clerics really distinctive. He's supposedly the guy that trains and mentors John Preston and also the one to "open his eyes" so to speak. Sean Bean is a great actor and I hoped they would've expanded the Errol Partridge character. A tall order you say? It shall be done!!! So up first is Sean Bean as Errol Partridge - the mentor/partner of the Christian Bale character - John Preston. It's no secret I'm a ginormous fan of the film and it's my goal to recreate every single character in the film. If you haven't seen it, do yourself a giant favor and go rent or buy this awesome film on DVD. It blew my mind that Equilibrium didn't have more press coverage beyond some film connoisseurs chatting on online forums. With a cast like that, how can you go wrong?! For whatever reason the studios never marketed this gem as it should and the first time I saw it was on DVD. It stars Christian Bale, Sean Bean, Taye Diggs, Emily Watson and William Fichtner. Equilibrium is probably one of the most under-rated films ever. ![]() CUSTOM SEAN BEAN AS ERROL PARTRIDGE FROM "EQUILIBRIUM" SEAN BEAN as ERROL PATRIDGE from EQUILIBRIUM PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A COMPLETELY CUSTOM FIGURE.
